A Brief History of the Vietnamese Constitutional Monarchist League

After 50 years from the day His Imperial Majesty Bao Dai abdicated because of "the Happiness of the People and the Independence of the Country", the Vietnamese Imperial Family kept silent and took no action to fulfill great accomplishments as the Nguyen Ancestors did for the Nation of Vietnam.

On August 25th, 1945 His Imperial Majesty Bao Dai was deposed by the Vietminh Communist movement's pressure. Before the Ngo Mon Great Gate of Imperial Capitol of Hue, he said to the People: "I would rather be a citizen of an independent country than king of an enslaved one."

Up to 1949, he returned to power as the Chief of State under the form of Constitutional Monarchist Regime. With his vigorous struggle's efforts, he was successful in performing the Unity of Nation from North to South and the Independence as his Ancestor Emperor Gia Long did for the Country (1802). But in 1956, he was deposed again by his former mandarin Ngo Dinh Diem who assumed the role of first president. Diem was supported by the American authorities, betrayed the Emperor and held a referendum on the future of the Vietnamese monarchy.

Diem's act caused disastrous consequences, not only for the Nguyen Dynasty, but also for all of the Nation and the democracy's future in Southeast Asia since his Republican Regime failed terribly from the very start.
Before the adversity and vicissitude of the Nation, the Vietnamese Imperial Family's members did nothing to perform any accomplishment for the Country. His Imperial Majesty Bao Dai's children are living silently in France. The Crown Prince Bao Long, Prince Bao Thang and Princesses almost forgot their Imperial background because they are living away from the Country and People from 1956 when their Emperor Father left the Regime.

Up to April 1993, the Vietnamese Imperial Family Overseas Central Council was established in Los Angeles USA, and the delegation under the leadership of H.I.H. Prince Kien Hoa Buu Chanh was invited to the United Kingdom to attend the solemn meeting in the House of Commons on December 16th, 1993. Prince Buu Chanh (Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh) delivered a speech in which he insisted the return of power of H.R.H. Prince Norodom Sihanouk as King, and proposed a FREE AREA and COMMONWEALTH including four Kingdoms of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma.

In the meeting,  Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh with other Princes as H.R.H. Prince Mangkra Souvannaphouma of Laos, H.R.H. Prince Schwebomin of Burma and other agreement experts etc. discussed about an agreement for the four Imperial and Royal Families based on H.I.H. Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh's proposal model. In closing, the Mutual Agreement was signed between four Imperial and Royal Families including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma. Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh representing the Vietnamese Imperial Family signed in the Agreement. H.R.H. Prince Mangkra Souvannaphouma signed in the role of the Lao Royal Family's representative. H.R.H. Prince Schwebomin signed as the Burmese Royal Family's representative. Afterwards, Madame Marie de Roland-Peel, General Secretary of the British Committee for Free Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma visited the Kingdom of Cambodia to meet His Royal Majesty Norodom Sihanouk and H.R.H. Norodom Ranariddh. Finally the Mutual Agreement was completed with the signatures of Princesses of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

After signing the Agreement, an Imperial and Royal League was founded. That was the Southeast Asia Imperial and Royal League.  Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh was unanimously nominated as the President of the League. H.R.H. Prince Mangkra Souvannaphouma of Laos was the Secretary General. H.R.H. Prince Schwebomin of Burma was the Honorary Treasurer of the League.

On December 22nd, 1993, the delegation of Vietnamese Imperial Family had an Imperial audience with His Imperial Majesty Bao Dai in Paris, France. Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh reported the excellent results of the meeting in the House of Commons and a week working with Royal Highnesses, Excellencies, VIP and Venerable Guests in London to His Imperial Majesty. The delegation listened carefully to His Imperial Majesty and received the precious advice and orders from him as the magnetic needle for the Vietnamese Imperial Family and the League's actions and operation.

After the Southeast Asia Imperial and Royal League was established, the International Monarchist League (founded 1943 having the main office in London and annexes around the world) announced this foundation and introduced to the International League's members on the Journal of the International Monarchist League. Afterwards many League members across the Globe got in touch with the Southeast Asia Imperial and Royal League. They are devoted to support the League.

Returning to the United States of America, Prince Nguyen Phuc Buu Chanh along with his staff, respected dignitaries and patriots etc. founded the Vietnamese Constitutional Monarchist League (January 1994). He was the founder of the League. From that time, the Vietnamese Constitutional Monarchist League has been working very hard and effectively. It has good conditions to cooperate with international organizations, world's politicians, religious leaders, international businessmen, and charitable and human rights agencies in respect to the human rights and freedom, and the restoration of Monarchy in the Indo-China.

In September 2001, the Journal of the International Monarchist League published an excellent article relating to the possible change in Vietnam, and the members of the exiled Royal Family's efforts in the restoration of Vietnamese Monarchy. The International Monarchist League introduced again their struggle activities to all International League's members across the Globe.

After that article published, a lot of International League's members from Spain, France, Poland, England, United States etc. got in touch with the Vietnamese
